our open air restaurant

We hope you have pleasant memories of our small open air restaurant and the bar. You have a nice view at the coastline and the garden. A cool breeze from the sea usually makes airconditioning unnecessary.

drinking water

Meanwhile some stores (most of them in Larena) sell filtered and processed drinking water from small amounts up to some gallons. We use generally filtered water (Katadyn) for cooking. Up to now we newer had any water related health problems.

philippine food

Spanish and american influence have left their imprints on the philippine cuisine. There are plenty of meat- and fish dishes. The main food consists of rice; most households cook it without any salt. Vegetables are used sparesly. Meat is often grilled or roasted on open charcoal fires. Hot and refined asian spices never had much influence on the philippine menus, even chili is used only in traces. One of the main spices is soy sauce. A highlight for the Filipinos is the Fiesta. For this event lots of pigs, cattle, goats and chickens are slaughtered and prepared. Because of the way of the preparation and the tropical climate all of the dishes must be consumed within few days. Preserving methods like smoking, drying or salting of meat are unknown here.

beverages

beer One of the favourite beverages, it is consumed in quantities. There is not much choice when it comes to breweries: there are only 2 mayor companies producing a couple of brands and beer sorts. The most well known are the products of the San Miguel brewery. Nowadays there is even a light beer available.
wine Most inhabitants of Siquijor know only mass wine. Some imported wines are available, most of them are from california or Spain. As a table wine the are quite fair. Vintage wines of better quality are typical luxury products which are only available in the cities.
liquor As the country produces plenty of sugar cane rum is one of the most widespread alcoholic bewerages beside beer. There are some locally produced Brandys, gins and other distilled liquors. Additional there is a number of imported distilled products. By the way: most Filipinos mean rum, gin, brandy and other hard drinks when they talk about "wine".
soft drinks Besides the well known Cola bewerages Sprite, Seven-Up and some orange flavored lemonades are readily available.
coffee is a standard product, although everybody means powder coffee. Above this we offer of course a very fair native brewed coffee, either prepared as espresso or in normal strength.
tea is seldom asked for in the Philippines. That´s why there is only one american tea brand in bags generally available. Tea connoiseurs or lovers of herbal tea better bring their own stock.
milk is mostly milk for long conservation imported from New Zealand. In the south of the island there is a small dairy selling fresh milk in bottles.

shopping

Generally you can buy almost everything in the Philippines if you only travel far enough... and the further you are from Manila, Cebu and other big cities the more difficult it is to obtain certain products nobody is asking for in the countryside. To buy rare things like vintage wines or even cheese we have to travel to the neighbor islands to Dumaguete or Cebu. But the general supply of foods is absolutely no problem with the exeption of seasonal shortages.
